Tooth with Dental Sealant vs Tooth with no Sealant

SEALANTS

When permanent molars erupt, they have tiny grooves that a toothbrush cannot effectively penetrate, but bacteria and food particles certainly can. This may eventually lead to cavities. A sealant is a material that is painlessly placed into these grooves shortly after the teeth erupt to create a smooth surface that is easy to keep clean, and greatly reduces the chance of developing a cavity on the biting surface of the tooth. Sealants are generally placed the first time around your child’s 6th birthday.

Routine Dental Cleaning Service

PROPHYLAXIS (ROUTINE CLEANINGS)

A professional cleaning is recommended for those patients who generally practice good oral hygiene, and who are free of active periodontal disease and inflammation. Regular cleanings can diminish the likelihood of cavities and the progression to active periodontal (gum) disease. Prophylaxis is generally recommended every 6 months, but the recall time varies based on you individual oral condition.

Gentle Fluoride Varnish Application

FLOURIDE VARNISH

Flouride Varnish is thin, gel-like material that is generally applied to children’s teeth to strengthen them and prevent decay, but can be applied to adults who suffer from sensitive teeth.

Dental Screening with a Mouth Mirror

ORAL CANCER SCREENING, REGULAR EXAMS, AND DIAGNOSTIC RADIOGRAPHS

Regular dental exams are recommended to identify dental disease promptly, and initiate treatment as soon as possible for the best possible outcome. This process includes an oral cancer screening, periodontal (gum) evaluation, and the use of diagnostic radiographs to identify dental disease. We usually recommend an exam at least every 6 months, but that may depend on your oral condition.

A Healthy Mouth After Periodontal Therapy

PERIODONTAL THERAPY AND MAINTENANCE

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory process accompanied by a chronic low grade bacterial infection that results in the loss of the surrounding bone and tissue that anchor the teeth in the jaws. This inflammatory process also triggers the inflammatory process throughout the rest of the body which can exacerbate other health conditions (especially diabetes and heart disease), or create an environment for new conditions to manifest themselves. If left untreated, it will eventually lead to tooth loss, and can cause other systemic diseases to progress. Once it is present, periodontal disease can be treated and put into remission, but cannot be “cured”. This is why, once it has been treated, it is imperative that a periodontal maintenance program be followed to prevent the disease from becoming active again. The frequency of the maintenance visits depends on the severity of the disease, individual health conditions, and the type of bacteria present, which can be tested for. Maintenance visits can range from 6 weeks through 6 months.
